Vandalism at cemetery leaves resident heartbroken

The resident went to tend to his father’s grave when he was met by a disappointing sight

Maintenance and security at cemeteries in Estcourt has been a serious concern among locals.

Reports of attacks, theft, neglect and vandalism have been reported in the past, with residents calling on the municipality as well as police to work together to restore the sanctity at cemeteries.

Another resident was left heartbroken after a visit to the Keate Street cemetery last Wednesday (May 31). The resident went to tend to his father’s grave when he was met by a disappointing sight.

Vast amounts of litter could be found inside the cemetery and vile acts of vandalism could be seen.

Litter strewn around the tombstones.

The resident told the Estcourt News that engine oil was poured over the tombstones and a religious statue had been painted on.

He called on police to monitor the cemeteries, saying that it was quite possible that ‘paras’ (homeless people that commit crimes to feed substance abuse) are responsible for the vandalism.
