Taxi owners will strike tomorrow?

Klipriver taxi owners say they will be non-operational, but this is not a 'protest and will not disrupt other means of transport

There has been confusion and panic following a message that’s been doing the rounds on social media, claiming that there will be a taxi strike on Monday, May 29.

According to the message, taxi owners falling under the Klipriver Taxi Association will be embarking on a strike which will disturb the operation of the town.

The message continues to say that the aim is to force the chairperson of the association, Mr Masondo, and other committee members to resign.

It is alleged that these members are accused of maladministration and corruption.

Disgruntled taxi owners have confirmed that their taxis and taxi ranks, under the Klipriver Taxi Association, will indeed be non-operational on Monday. They say this is to voice their frustration, as there was supposed to be a meeting on Friday, May 26, to elect the new executive committee. The meeting was postponed until Wednesday, May 31.

However, they say this is not a ‘protest’ as such and they will not be blocking any roads or disrupting other means of transport such as buses and meter taxis.

When contacted on Friday, Klipriver Taxi Association chairperson Mr Masondo described the message as fake and said that the details in the message are not true.

“There is no strike that is going to take place. There are people that we know who are spreading this fake message. We can confirm that taxis will be working on Monday,” said Masondo.
