The MhlakaMpiloz Appreciation Awards were held for the second time this year.
This awards event highlights the talents and expertise of locals, with various categories ranging from ‘Best DJ’ to ‘Best Ward / PR Councillor’.
Estcourt’s DJ Mpiloz (Philani Manyoni) came up with the idea and says the awards are aimed at empowering people who are doing great things in the community.
“We opened the nominations from December until February for people to nominate their favourite candidates. The public got involved by nominating their choices via SMS. From there, we short-listed the names and the top five people in each category. The event was marketed on social media and posters,” explained DJ Mpiloz.
The awards ceremony was planned for the Easter Weekend, but due to inclement weather, it had to be postponed.
At the event, the crowd got to enjoy the musical talents of national and local artists that included Mbulelo (The Queen and Scandal) Skye Wanda and Gigi Lamayne, as well as DJ Mpiloz himself, who is internationally recognised.
The winners received certificates and trophies. DJ Mpiloz hopes that as the MhlakaMpiloz Appreciation Awards grows, there will be more support.
“I wish that our municipality would be part of this good initiative and be a sponsor of one or two of the categories, so that we are able to give our winners better prizes. “Currently, sponsorship of prizes comes out of my pocket and it’s not easy. Next year, we have our first business sponsor that will sponsor two categories. We invite other business people to help make the MhlakaMpiloz Appreciation Awards bigger and better,” concluded DJ Mpiloz.
