Newcastle Lions Club welcomes their first litter of Leos after four years

The Newcastle Lions Club hosted an exquisite installation evening at Avalon Guest Manor on April 24 to welcome the first Leo Club in Northern KZN.

Lions President Nicolette Baney said the Leos serve as the junior section of the Lions Club and could later on go on to join the club as Lions members.

The Lions Club is a charity organisation that regularly participates in various charity events including donating food parcels to school feeding schemes, personal food parcel donations, the Winter Warmer Project, and lending a helping hand where and when needed.

The aim of the Leos, according to Baney, is to continue with this legacy, just on a much larger and broader scale.

“This group of young people have come together and have big plans in place for collecting funds to help those in need. One project in the pipeline will be hosted at the Majuba Lodge in June, and all the money raised on the day will be used to buy school shoes for those in need.”

Baney believes that being a part of a NPO such as this ‘helps one grow as a person and makes one realise just how lucky you are to be in a position to help others.’

“We are excited to mentor them and to help them give back to their community. As the Lions Club, we are so proud to finally have a Leo Club and thank the parents present here tonight as well as our Lions members for always being willing to help when needed.”

Baney went on to recite the Lions Creed before welcoming guest speaker, Sue Smith, who is the District Chair of Leos 410e and Leos advisor for Tuks University, to the podium.

Smith is also a member of the Acorn Foundation and donated R2000 to the Leos on behalf of the foundation to help kick-start their fundraising account.

Following a formal speech, Smith introduced the newly elected Leo Club, wishing them the best of luck and reminding them what a privilege it was for her to install them as Leos,’ knowing that they would one day go out into the world and become incredible leaders.’

The board members were announced as follows:

Leo and Lions Presidents Sarah and Nicolette Baney went on to hand over the Lions pins and certificates to each member, and they pledged their commitment to the club by signing their first ever club installation chart, which will be framed and hung in their club house.
