Morning hike ends in rescue mission

It was suspected that the 37-year-old had a femur fracture after slipping in the wet conditions

While out on a hike to the Tugela Falls in the Northern Drakensberg this morning (April 29), a woman slipped, resulting in a dislocated ankle.

She had to be rescued by paramedics and then airlifted to safety. According to ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell, it was suspected that the 37-year-old had a femur fracture after slipping in the wet conditions.

“ER24 was activated by Mountain Rescue Services and arrived at the Royal Natal National Park around 08:30. The patient was airlifted from the mountain by a rescue helicopter to the waiting ambulances at the national park. Secondary assessment revealed that the patient was suffering from a dislocated ankle,” said Campbell.

The woman was treated before being transported to a private hospital in Harrismith.
