Workers go on strike at Dunlop

SRSA is confident that it has followed all due process in this matter so far

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) began striking yesterday (April 25) at Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (SRSA) – Dunlop Tyre Factory Ladysmith. According to NUMSA, the reason for the strike is because the staff are fed up with management.

The union members are demanding the suspension of the factory’s CEO, head of Human Resources and production co-ordinator, pending a disciplinary hearing for allegedly undermining the union.

SRSA confirmed that NUMSA initiated industrial action at its tyre manufacturing plant, leading to the cessation of operations and production at the facility.

This strike comes after prolonged tension between SRSA and NUMSA on several issues, including an ongoing disciplinary process involving NUMSA-affiliated SRSA employees.

“Our management and HR teams are engaging with the various structures of the union to resolve the situation as amicably and quickly as possible. The safety and well-being of our employees is our primary concern, and we are appealing to all parties to act in a responsible and peaceful manner. We remain committed to ending this industrial action as soon as possible,” said CEO of Sumitomo Rubber South Africa, Lubin Ozoux.
