Fiery start to the week

No one was injured and the emergency teams thank the community for their selfless donations in their time of need.

Vryheid residents woke up to the smell of smoke on Monday morning.

Multiple emergency services and AbaQulusi Fire & Rescue were called out to a fire in Stretch Crescent. When the teams arrived at the scene, the warehouse of a well-known furniture store was burning fiercely. The building was engulfed in flames as they blaze ‘devoured’ the structure. Fire-fighters valiantly fought the inferno, with some of them becoming dehydrated very quickly. Businesses and individuals in the community donated water and energy drinks to sustain the ‘heroes’.

Half an hour of bravery and relentless determination by the fire-fighters eventually quelled the flames. Damping-down operations started when the flames had all been doused and fire-fighters were able to enter the building. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services area manager Frikkie Bekker and his team were on standby to assist in case anyone was injured. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, but preliminary investigations indicate that it may have started due to a faulty electrical wire. No one was injured and the emergency teams thank the community for their selfless donations in their time of need.
