The protesters included the leadership and members of the ANC, NFP, NPA and APEMO

The opposition parties – ANC, NPA, APEMO and NFP – handed over a ‘memorandum of demands’ to the IFP-led Alfred Duma Local Municipality and uThukela District Municipality today (April 20).

A large crowd of ANC members brought some parts of town to a standstill as they marched through the CBD.

The march began before midday from the Kandahar Avenue sports field.

The first stop was at the Town Hall, where ANC members – led by Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo and regional leadership – handed over a memorandum.

Some of the demands included: the removal of Cllr Abbas Warasally (Ward 20), patching of potholes in all wards, fixing of street lights, and maintenance of access roads in rural areas.

The memorandum was received by Chief Whip Cllr Sabelo Sithole.

Thereafter, the march proceeded to the uThukela District Municipality offices, where another memorandum was handed over.

Grievances aimed at uThukela included: lack / shortage of water in the district, sewer spillages, and the investigation of the vehicle that was involved in an accident in which it is alleged that Cllr Mthokozisi Khoza was driving while not authorised to do so.

This memorandum was received by Speaker Cllr Lihle Nqubuka.

Delivering a message of support, ANC Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo accused the IFP of being a ‘stooge of the apartheid regime’ and now a ‘stooge of the DA’. He further accused the IFP of being sell-outs and being used to oppress black people, saying that this is happening even now. He labelled the DA as being racist and continuing to turn a blind eye to the needs of the masses.
