Committed constable clinches conviction

The case was wrapped up in the Estcourt Regional Court recently

A man who has been terrorising the community of Sahlumbe in Weenen has been put behind bars.
This is thanks to dedicated detective work by Constable Mngadi.

The ‘rookie’ detective was on standby when he was called to a murder scene in May 2021. Sihle Elias Dladla viciously attacked a 68-year-old man in his home in the Mtebhelu area of Sahlumbe. The victim, Zanempi Mdlolo, was assaulted with a garden spade.

After being knocked off his feet, Dladla robbed Mdlolo of his wallet and cellphone. Mdlolo sustained serious injuries and died while receiving medical attention.

“The accused, who had been terrorising the community, had fled the scene prior to police arrival. Constable Mngadi attended to the crime scene. His thorough and swift detective work resulted in the arrest of the accused a short while later,” explained police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.

When Dladla was apprehended, he was found with the deceased’s cellphone and cash. He was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated robbery.

“He was detained and bail was opposed by the state. The evidence against the accused was overwhelming,” said Khan.

The case was wrapped up in the Estcourt Regional Court recently, where Dladla was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for murder and another 15 years for aggravated robbery. 10 years of the robbery sentence will run concurrently with the murder sentence. Dladla is expected to serve 20 years behind bars.

“The investigating officer was elated with the sentence; he took the opportunity to place on record his appreciation to his colleagues who assisted him during the investigation, as well as Mr Mbewu, the public prosecutor, for guiding him during the investigation,” concluded Khan.
