The protest action that took place this morning (March 22) outside the uThukela offices is over and the staff are back at work.
The protest started with workers bringing tyres and placing them outside the uThukela offices, situated between Lyell and Forbes streets.
The tyres were set alight, with black smoke billowing into the sky, which could be seen for miles.

Both Lyell and Forbes streets were blocked, with a large police presence monitoring the strike.

Senior managers from uThukela arrived at the scene shortly after 11:00 and began negotiations with worker representatives and senior police officials. Within 30-45 minutes, the striking workers dispersed.
Fire-fighters from Alfred Duma Local Municipality arrived on scene, extinguishing the burning tyres and clearing the roads, once again opening them to traffic.
