Female force on the freeway

Information and awareness were also priorities at the 'Women in Law Enforcement Roadblock'

Law enforcement officers from as far afield as Newcastle assembled on the N3 near Mooi River on March 10 to be part of a roadblock with a ‘feminine presence’.

Mooi River SAPS partnered with Midway Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) to host a ‘Women in Law Enforcement Roadblock’, which included officers from various parts of the province. This was the brainchild of the acting station commander of Mooi River SAPS, Captain Mathe.

Mooi River SAPS’s Captain Mathe (acting station commander) organised the ‘Women in Law Enforcement Roadblock’ and awareness campaign.

The programme was to show support for ‘International Women’s Day’, which was commemorated on March 8. In addition to rooting out criminal elements on the N3 highway, the roadblock was also about disseminating information about gender-based violence and road safety.

“This roadblock was about empowering female law enforcement members to make a difference and for the public to feel safe in the presence of these officers. Pamphlets on gender-based violence and road safety were handed out to the public. The members took time to answer all concerns from the public, or give the advice that was sought,” explained Scherry du Toit from Mooi River SAPS.

The enthusiastic officers took to the busy N3 and set about their tasks. A total of 348 vehicles and people were searched. Police arrested two illegal immigrants and four fines were issued. Passing motorists also received juice bottles, bags and licence card disc holders, sponsored by Mpofana RTI.

“Although it was a women’s roadblock, we had plenty of male members and officers to assist as well. Captain Mathe wishes to thank all role players for helping to raise awareness,” said du Toit.
