‘Have no expectation’ by Halalisani Shoba

I have learned that you cannot have expectations and fail to be responsible at the same time

“Nobody owes you any favours, have no expectations. Just do right”. Expectations can make or break you. The problem with expectations is that we tend to forget that, outcomes won’t be positive always. As much as it’s not an easy thing to do but we are meant to live this thing called ‘life’, with no expectations.

Last week after a long day I had, I passed through a mini market where I purchased my favourite chocolate. After having my chocolate, I than dispossessed its wrapper on the road; as I was walking. ‘What are you doing’? my brain rushed to ask. Quickly, I realised that my act was totally wrong, I was guilty of littering since the street was so clean. I recalled my steps, picked up the wrapper with an aim to disposes it to the nearest dumping bin. What were my expectations of disposing the wrapper on that clean road? Who was meant to pick it up for me? Mind you, there was no-one around but I decided that it was a right thing for me to go back and pick up the paper as the way of cleaning up my own mess.

I have since learned that you cannot have expectations and fail to be responsible at the same time. If I threw the paper with the expectations that some random municipality worker will pick it up, then I would have proven to be irresponsible. Responsibility doesn’t start with someone else but charity begins at home, that is just a basic principle we ought not to forget.

It starts with me; I am responsible for my actions. I cannot do bad and expect someone else to do good. If we can all have such mentality, that we have to do good always; I believe we would be living in a better space. If something is wrong than it should stay like that, if something is right than again nothing should change that fact. Have no expectations, just do RIGHT.
