Alleged syndicate steals three vehicles

With the device, they managed to open the vehicles that were parked at the garage and started the ignitions without a key

A security guard at a well-known car dealership in Pongola was held at gunpoint on Friday night after two suspects pretended that their vehicle had broken down. The guard noticed a silver Toyota Fortuner approaching the dealership. The driver of the Fortuner got out and opened the bonnet. The guard informed the suspect that it was not a mechanical garage. The passenger then emerged from the vehicle with a pistol and pointed it at the security guard. They tied him up with a cable while they searched him, taking his cellphone and panic button. Four other men arrived at the scene on foot, carrying a bag. It is alleged that the men all knew one another. They opened the bag and took out a device that looked like a laptop. The security guard recognised the device as equipment mechanics use when they service vehicles. With the device, they managed to open the vehicles that were parked at the garage and started the ignitions without a key. They fled the scene with three vehicles, while the silver Fortuner followed them. They stole two double-cab Toyota GD6 2.8 vehicles and one Club Cab Toyota bakkie GD6 2.8 – all to the value of R1.9 million. Police acted swiftly by profiling the suspects, whom they suspect are part of a syndicate the SAPS is aware of. Good police work resulted in two of the suspects being caught. The three stolen vehicles were recovered in Piet Retief.
