Municipal manager leads clean-up campaign through CBD

With refuse bags in hand, the team assisted the Municipal Manager in cleaning up areas of the CBD that had been severely impacted by the floods:

The Municipality’s community services department began a clean-up campaign on Monday, February 20, following the heavy rain and flooding that engulfed the town – destroying roads, infrastructure, and homes.

The clean-up campaign focused on cleaning up the Newcastle’s central business district.

According to the municipality’s communications department, municipal manager, Z.W Mcineka, who is also the strategic executive director for community services, led this initiative with a team of EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) workers, municipal senior management, safety management officers, and traffic officials.

“The main goal of the clean-up campaign was to instil a culture of upkeep of our environment and cleanliness of our town and all its surrounding areas in order to maintain a positive outlook and reclaim the title of cleanest town,” read the statement.

With refuse bags in hand, the team worked alongside the municipal manager to clean areas of the CBD that had been severely impacted by the floods, including the Newcastle Bus and taxi rank, Terminus Street, Kirkland Street, and Ayliff Street.

While it is the municipality’s responsibility to keep its citizens in a clean and safe environment, the municipal manager praised the municipal officials for banding together to aggressively combat grease and grime on the streets.

“Through this initiative I have witnessed the power of unity and solidarity which shows what we can indeed achieve if we work together. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent natural disasters, but we can take conservation and restorative measures to improve our infrastructure,” Mcineka said.

He also alluded to raising awareness through initiatives such as the clean-up, and that the state of our town and ‘keeping municipal areas clean is everyone’s responsibility.’
