COLUMN: ‘Stay safe’ by Halalisani Shoba

No soil is supposed to be fertile through the blood of another human being.

I normally associate rainfall with ‘showers of blessings’. Even after the heavy rainfalls we have been experiencing in the past days, I still maintain my position. With all the evilness that people have been committing lately, I feel like nature is responding accordingly.

Just last week, we were being presented with the third quarter crime statistics of this country. That is from the period of October to December 2022. It was disappointing to note that 7 555 people were murdered in a short space of 3 months. Tell me what sickness is that? We are talking about human beings here, whom some  were brutally killed in front of their loved ones, even if that wasn’t the case, no one deserves to be murdered.

No one has a right to take someone else’s life. No soil is supposed to be fertile through the blood of another human being. Statistics or no statistics but the reality is that, violence in South Africa is getting worse and nothing is being done about that. We can blame our justice system, but the worse scenario is that we live with perpetrators within our communities. Some are well known but we choose to keep silent because it hasn’t happened to our close associates. We have since become a sick nation.

As we have been experiencing heavy rainfalls, I feel like the nature is tired of all our wrongdoings. As much as we are hoping for sunny days, but again we must be careful of what we wish for. These heavy rainfalls continue to cause a lot of distractions and damage to infrastructure and people have lost their lives. It is fine to think that this is just another pattern, especially concerning climate change, but at the end of the day, as human beings we are responsible for everything that is happening around us.

Now that nature is responding accordingly, what did we expect? How do we continue to pray and have expectations of better days, while we still finding it difficult to repent from our evilness? Since we believe our country to be a rainbow nation, its high time we understand that God is the only rainbow we need as things stand.

Those who have the power to assist; may they continue to do so, especially to those who are vulnerable at this moment and continue to be affected by ongoing heavy rainfalls. Let us all adhere to warnings issued by the South African Weather Service, so that we will be able to take proper precautions going forward.
