Search for missing man temporarily called off

'Fafo' was last seen leaving home to visit relatives across the river

The search for Thulani ‘Fafo’ Masango was temporarily called off today (February 16).

Masango (22) went missing on Thursday in the Matiwaneskop area.

According to a family member, he was last seen leaving home to visit relatives who live across the Indaka River. The family assumed he had arrived there safely and had spent the weekend. However, when the family asked after him, cousin Smanga Zwane said he was never there.

“We only realised on Monday that he was missing. We suspect that he drowned in the river, since it was raining that day and the bridge was flooded,” said Zwane.

Elandslaagte SAPS, together with the community, started searching on Wednesday but were unsuccessful.

The Ladysmith K9 Unit, led by Warrant Officer Jacques Meyer, responded to the scene today but were unable to conduct a search because of the high water.
