Municipality embarks on initiative to reset prepaid meters

The municipality is urging all users of pre-paid electricity meters to allow field employees access to their homes.

The Newcastle Municipality has issued a public notice informing residents that it will embark on an initiative known as the Token Identifier (TID) Rollover.

The initiative, which aims to reduce electricity distribution losses while improving service delivery and revenue collection, will kick off in February 2023.

“On November 24, 2024, all prepaid meters installed in the Newcastle Local Municipality will stop dispersing electricity. The technical solution is to reset each meter by entering two (2) special tokens before November 2024”.

To perform this remedy and ensure completion of the initiative by the November 2024 deadline, municipal technicians must audit all stands, including prepaid and water meters.

The municipality is urging all users of pre-paid electricity meters to allow field employees access to their homes and to ensure that someone is present to assist municipal officials.
