NPA clarifies farmer’s unlawful use of water matter

The NPA has clarified some of the information that was issued to the media

In last week’s print edition of the Northern Natal News, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) released a statement regarding the unlawful use of water by an Estcourt farmer (Estcourt famer fined over R1.7million for unlawful use of water).

Unfortunately, some incorrect information was disseminated.

The NPA’s regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara has since issued the following statement to clarify some of the information that was issued.

“With the reference to the media statement issued on December 8, regarding the matter of Mr Roy Clifford Braithwaite, the NPA wishes to clarify the following:

– Braithwaite was not arrested but appeared in court pursuant to a summons being served on him.

– The matter was finalised by way of an alternate dispute resolution, whereby Braithwaite agreed to compensate the Department of Water and Sanitation to the amount of approximately R1.7 million.

– The case against Braithwaite was thus withdrawn at the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court, in light of the agreement between him and the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The NPA regrets any inconvenience caused by the release of the previous statement in this matter.”
