Providing relief to flood displaced communities

More than 90 families received assistance from the Al-Imdaad Foundation

Estcourt’s Al-Imdaad Foundation teams responded to the needs of displaced families who have been affected by flooding in the Peacevale area of Pietermaritzburg.

The Msunduzi River broke its banks during heavy rains on the evening of November 9.

The Al-Imdaad teams were on the ground for an assessment on November 10, together with MEC for Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs Sihle Zikalala and Provincial Disaster Management. Based on the assessment, the Al-Imdaad Foundation provided blankets and hygiene kits for displaced families at the Peacevale Mosque Hall.

The foundation also partnered with the Pietermaritzburg-based South African National Zakaat Fund to provide hot meals for the affected families.

Around 96 families, consisting of approximately 246 people, were displaced by the flooding and had to be accommodated at the Mosque Hall.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Abed Karrim described the frightening increase in flooding events recently, saying, “We have seen this scenario in Ladysmith, we have seen it in Durban and we are now seeing it again in Pietermaritzburg, where homes are being flooded to such an extent that people have to actually start running for their lives.”

The Al-Imdaad Foundation strives to address the needs of flood-affected communities and displaced families in various areas, and has been active in recent responses in Ladysmith, Durban, the Free State and Pietermaritzburg.
