Newcastle Municipality announces a new era of power for rural communities

According to a municipality statement, the construction project was still in its early stages and is scheduled to be completed in April 2024.

In order to fulfil its mandate of providing electricity to all residents and to accelerate sustainable electrification processes in rural communities, the Newcastle Municipality, through Eskom, has introduced a contractor who will be building the long-awaited Ematsheketsheni Substation.

Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, Deputy Mayor Cllr Musa ‘Shukela’ Thwala, and Speaker of Council Cllr Thengamehlo Zulu, and Eskom representatives, visited Ward 6 to formally introduce the project and contractor responsible for the substation’s construction.

According to a municipality statement, the construction project was still in its early stages and is scheduled to be completed in April 2024.

“The primary goal of constructing the new substation is to ensure reliable electricity supply while alleviating capacity issues in Dicks Halt, Jobstown, Johnstone, and surrounding areas,” it reads.

When completed, the new Ematsheketsheni substation will have two 20 MVA transformers as well as new switching and protection technology.
