Afriforum responds to Newcastle’s continuous crumbling sewer crisis

A recent meeting between AfriForum and the municipal manager of the Newcastle Local Municipality resulted in an open and frank discussion of issues of mutual interest.

According to AfriForum representative, Peet Liebenberg, they met with Mr Mcineka in their capacity as a registered civil rights organization, acting on behalf of their members and other affected Newcastle residents.

AfriForum requested the meeting in response to several letters sent to the municipality that went unanswered for months.

This followed promises that the ongoing sewage crisis will soon be eliminated, residents of Lyell Street in Newcastle’s CBD remain skeptical.

This after their neighbourhood has remained a breeding ground for never ending sewage flooding.

On Thursday, October 6, Newcastle Advertiser journalists, Zianne Leibrandt and Estella Naicker, along with Eugene van Aswegen of Afriforum KZN and journalists from a national publication, went to the area to see if the situation was being addressed as promised by the municipal leadership.

However, what they witnessed left them with more questions than answers.
