Rabies prevention campaign reaches dozens

Dozens of pets were vaccinated during the rabies prevention drive

Vaccination is rated as one of the most effective ways to prevent rabies, as well as interrupt outbreaks of the disease, and this is what the Mooi River & District SPCA set out to do recently.

To commemorate World Rabies Day on September 28, Dr Thashia Reddy and the SPCA team held a vaccination drive in Rosetta.
Pet owners at the railway houses were visited, as well as in Ntuli Village, where animals were vaccinated.

The team also compiled a list of pets that will be sterilized.

After a busy few hours, the team set up at the community hall, where pet owners brought their ‘furry friends’ to get their ‘jabs’.

“Thank you to everyone who donated towards this invaluable outreach day,” said Gaynor Lawson from the Mooi River & District SPCA.

The team will be visiting the Kamberg community on October 13 to continue the vaccination and awareness drive.

Since May this year, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed a total of seven human rabies deaths in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Limpopo. Rabies is spread through contact with infected saliva from a rabid animal and is labelled as a ‘fatal viral infection of the brain’. Throughout the decades, vaccinations have become the best available measure to curb this killer disease.
