Councillor Mohammed holds Umzinyathi District Municipality accountable for water shortages

One of the main issues was water shortages in Glencoe where other parts of the town haven't had water for over a week.

A brief meeting was held by Ward 7 Councillor Abdool Mohammed with Umzinyathi District Municipality (UDM) Miss Mbatha, a personal assistant in the absentia of Mayor Petros Ngubane regarding the ongoing water crisis in Endumeni. Cllr Abdool hoped that Mayor Ngubane and UDM councilors were going to be present at this meeting, as the community of Glencoe demanded answers regarding the water crisis, but none of them availed themselves of the meeting.
During the formal meeting, a representative from the Glencoe community Adele van Rooyen was also presented. A letter was handed to Mbatha on behalf of the community with the community’s grievances over the water issues. One of the main issues was water shortages in Glencoe where other parts of the town haven’t had water for over a week.
“According to my knowledge UDM had 28 water tankers that are supposed to be dispatched all over Endumeni in such a crisis, however, a large number of their trucks are broken and not roadworthy and only four water tankers are on the road,” explained Cllr Mohammed. He also added that this is a great concern as these four trucks can not deliver water for the entire Endumeni’s seven wards. He also said that only one water tanker has been directed to assist the community of Dundee, Wasbank, and Glencoe.
Another concern addressed by Cllr Abdool is that UDM does not operate during load shedding and that they dont answer their telephone lines during working hours.
