Endumeni’s water gets worse day by day

Some residents in Glencoe have not had water for over a week and according to community members, no water tankers have been dispatched.

Residents have been complaining about water shortages for weeks on end and it seems as if their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
Community members from Wasbank, Dundee and Glencoe have said in one voice that Umzinyathi District Municipality (UDM) is on its knees and cannot deal with the crisis.
Ward 7 Councillor Mohammed Abdool told the Courier that he has contacted UDM on numerous occasions and spoke to operations & maintenance manager German Dlozi, who has still not gotten back to him regarding the water cuts.
“The community needs answers about this water crisis and as a councillor, it is beyond my powers. I have done all I can to get UDM’s attention in this matter,” said Cllr Abdool.
He added that he had a meeting with Dlozi and it seems as if the communities’ concerns have been overlooked.
Some residents in Glencoe have not had water for over a week and according to community members, no water tankers have been dispatched.
“I have called UDM time and time again, and they never answer the phone. The frustrating part is that we don’t know what the reason is behind our dry taps,” said Glencoe resident Amina Osman.
She concluded by saying that the community needs to take further steps now and go camp out at the UDM offices with buckets and water bottles. “Maybe then, UDM will attend to us.”
“This is no longer a water issue, but a humanitarian crisis, as UDM is still failing to dispatch water tankers,” said Wasbank resident Sandile Mthombeni.
He continued by saying that Wasbank still doesn’t have water and last week Tuesday, they gave the municipality seven days to come up with solutions and stop blaming the water cuts on load-shedding. He concluded by saying that if UDM has no answers by Tuesday, they will be back on the streets to protest.
Residents in Sibongile were relieved when they saw the Al-Imdaad Foundation water tanker last week Wednesday. “We were over-the-moon to see the water tanker in our location, as we have not had any water in Extension 18, Lindelani, for months on end!” explained Sizakele Kunene.
She said the meeting that took place in August with Dlozi was fruitless, as their taps are still running dry.
UDM was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to print.
