‘Walk for Charity’ held in Peacetown

Food parcels were donated to needy families as part of the event

The Joseph Shabalala Foundation, in partnership with Hungwe Travel, hosted a ‘Walk for Charity’ in the eMbuzweni area of Peacetown last Saturday (September 10). The event was held in remembrance of the late founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Joseph Shabalala.

The four-kilometre walk symbolically started at Kirkintulloch Primary School, as Shabalala attended this school in his youth. The finish line was at the sports grounds near Sicelokuhle High School.

Athletes, community members and schoolchildren all took part.

A unique feature of the walk was that the participants sang in jubilation as they headed towards the finish line. Of course, singing is something Joseph Shabalala is well known for.

As part of the charity walk, food parcels were donated to needy families in the area – more especially those who were affected by the floods earlier this year.

Speaking on behalf of the Joseph Shabalala Foundation, Thulani Shabalala said the walk was a success and they are happy that people came out in their numbers to participate. He added that their plans for the Bhekizizwe Joseph Shabalala (BJS) Marathon in February are in place. “We are planning to host gala dinners in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg in November. We are also spreading the word in all the countries we are touring, and inviting international athletes to come and participate as well,” said Thulani.
