The inner secrets of writing the perfect soul-stirring songs

Mo is excited about the fresh new line-up and is confident that Inner Secrets will hit the right chords with music lovers.

It has been a long and winding road for Mo Karim and his band ‘Inner Secrets’, but to quote from one of Mo’s own songs: I can see the light shining through the muddy waters.
Formed in 2008, local band Inner Secrets went through many trials and tribulations with the death of dynamic front-man Alberto Griffiths.
There were other lows too – like the plug being pulled by a friend and sponsor on a chance to play with Mike & the Mechanics at Sun City; recording contract hiccups; and changes in personnel.
However, like a rubber ball, Mo has the uncanny ability to keep on reinventing Inner Secrets, which now has a new, young bounce in its step.
Opting for a unique blend of young and old, and mixing in a variety of South African cultures (under the guidance of new manager, businessman and musician Wayne Dawson), Mo has assembled a line-up he is certain will hit the right notes.
Lead vocalist Cheree Ollewagen is fasting developing her own style with her powerful voice that is able to take on any genre of music. She made her breakthrough at the 2019 Sound Wave concerts and jumped at the opportunity to join Inner Secrets.
“I just love spending time with the band members and working on new material. I can’t wait to wow audiences and capture their hearts,” said an enthusiastic Cheree.
Besides music, she likes to keep fit and is active in the church.
Adding some grit and experience to the line-up is Ronnie ‘Boyce’ Naidoo – an Inner Secrets veteran since 2008. As a multi-instrumentalist, Ronnie is the bassist and backup vocalist. He also arranges the band’s original material, which is mostly written by Mo.
“I am looking forward to getting Inner Secrets out there again to a whole new set of music lovers, both here and around the country,” said a confident Ronnie.
The two other youngsters are Dylan Botha and Diwane Grobbelaar. Dylan is the drummer and has been mastering the ‘skins’ for seven years. “Music is nothing without a drum beat, as it is the beat that creates the atmosphere of the song,” he told the Courier.
Dylan is also a keen boxer, but always sets aside devotional time with the Lord.
“I love spending time with friends and in the practice room.
“I sincerely trust that God will guide our steps and lead us to places that will help us grow bold and touch the lives of others through our performances.”
Lead guitarist Diwane has been involved in music for five years. He says ‘music gives me an unexplainable feeling. I have always wanted to be part of a band and Inner Secrets has made my dream come true.”
Mo is excited about the fresh new line-up and is confident that Inner Secrets will hit the right chords with music lovers.
“We thank our manager, Wayne, for the confidence and dedication he has shown. It is now up to us to write the perfect songs.”
