Three killed in house fire

The 3-room house, including all the furniture, was completely destroyed

Residents in the Ncinjane area of St Chad’s are still in shock after three family members were killed in a house fire on Monday evening (September 12).

The three deceased have been identified as Felani Colen Ngubane (58), Zanokuhle Alwande Hlatshwayo (8) and Lubanzi Ndalwahne Mjiyakho (2).

It is alleged that the blaze started during load-shedding. The family was asleep together in the same house and the fire ignited when the electricity came back on.

Councillor AB Xaba of Ward 27 said he was called to the scene on that fateful night and tried to get help. However, the fire grew quickly and spread throughout the house. “As the community, we are still shocked. We are trying our level best to assist the family during this difficult time and we appeal to anyone who can help with anything to come forward,” said Cllr Xaba.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the incident, saying that Ladysmith Visible Policing officers responded to a complaint of a fire in the St Chad’s area on Monday evening. “The bodies of three people, including two children, had been extracted from a burning house. Detectives are investigating three counts of inquest. The cause of the fire is also being investigated,” said W/O Khan.
