Mayor joins ‘Break The Silence Walk’

The 13-day walk started in Kwa Thema township and will end in Durban

Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Zama Sibisi took part in the ‘Break The Silence Walk’ yesterday (September 6). The event is the brainchild of two non-governmental organisations (NPOs), namely Cool Dads Foundation and Hope for Africa.

The walk started in front of the Town Hall and is aimed at spreading awareness about various social issues.

The mayor did 10 kilometres and then left the members of the two organisations to continue on their journey.

The 13-day walk started in Kwa Thema, a township south-west of Springs in Gauteng, and is destined to end in Durban. The participants left Gauteng on August 29 and are expecting to reach Durban on September 12.

Mayor Sibisi welcomed both organisations and strode along for 10km as a token of appreciation. “The municipality supports this initiative, as we are always emphasising the importance of fighting the spread of gender-based violence (GBV). Their objectives are similar to what I believe in, more especially encouraging kids to go to school. Since the beginning of the year, I have donated at least 600 pairs of shoes, so it was therefore easy for me to support this initiative as well,” said the mayor.

Speaking on behalf of both NPOs, Bongani Luvalo said they are hoping to raise awareness, encourage men to act against GBV perpetrators and call on men to isolate abusers. He added that they are also collecting donations to help them buy school shoes for children who walk barefoot to school.

“We want to encourage men to be responsible fathers, and also raise awareness about absent fathers and the impact their absence has on families. We advocate for the rights of fathers who want access to their children but are denied this right for whatever reason,” said Luvalo.
