Water expected to return to normal

uThukela says that water supply was interrupted as a result of worker-related issues

After a week or so without water in certain areas of Ladysmith, uThukela says that residents can expect water supply to return slowly this afternoon (September 1) and be fully operational by tomorrow.

This comes after uThukela District Municipality management, led by Mayor NB Shabalala, visited the Ezakheni Water Treatment Works, where they met with workers this morning.

According to uThukela, the water supply was interrupted as a result of worker-related issues. It also appears that the acting municipal manager, MB Mnguni, and the area engineers were not aware of these issues and the mayor took it upon himself to resolve the situation. Some of the issues were then sorted out.

Management will continue to engage with workers on other employee-related matters that need to be ironed out. A meeting has been set for next Monday (September 5).

During today’s meeting, the affected parties reached a consensus that the acting municipal manager will facilitate the payment of all outstanding overtime pay. On the other hand, it was also agreed that workers will go back to work and switch on the pumps. Before the meeting was concluded, the operators went to switch on the pumps at the Abattoir Hill Reservoir, which supplies water in town; and the Aasvoelkop Reservoir, which supplies Ezakheni.

According to uThukela, it is therefore envisaged that the affected communities will receive normal water supply this afternoon or, at the latest, tomorrow.
