District mobilises against gender-based violence

Amajuba District Mayor, Vuselwa Bam was at the fore of the march through Madadeni.

Emulating the historic 1956 march by 20 000 women to the Union Buildings, a group of Madadeni residents marched to the local police station on August 24 in protest of the scourge of gender-based and child violence said to be sweeping the district.

At the front of the march was Amajuba District Mayor, Vuselwa Bam, who was joined by officials including Newcastle Mayor, Xolani Dube and district council representatives.

This march is an effort to raise awareness on gender-based violence amongst many and the negative impact violence has on women and children in the Amajuba District,” commented Cllr Bam.

She said that incidents of violence perpetrated against women and children remained unacceptably high in South Africa and more importantly, in the district.

Cllr Bam also called on residents to speak out against abuse in their homes or in their neighbours’ homes, and to stand in court to testify against abusers.

My message is that public safety is everybody’s business. All institutions, community groups and citizens need to contribute to the development of safe and secure communities for all our people.”
