uThukela on a go-slow?

At this point, we are unaware when water supply will be restored

Areas such as Acaciavale, Hillside, Aloe Park and Rose Park have been without water today (August 29), and residents are up-in-arms with uThukela.

The issue began last week and has persisted. Outraged residents continue battling with dry taps in some areas, as well as reports of dirty water.

There is no water at all in some places, while other areas have very low pressure. However, water is still available in most areas in the district. uThukela tankers are supplying water in some areas.

There have been allegations from sources within uThukela that staff are engaged in a ‘go-slow’. There have been  numerous reports of pipes and infrastructure being damaged.

In an earlier press release today, uThukela management blamed the shortage of water on so-called ‘sabotage by staff’.

According to uThukela, Department of Water & Sanitation employees based in certain areas held a meeting last week with the intention of disrupting water supply to communities throughout the weekend.

“If sabotage of this nature is proven to be true, employees will be dealt with accordingly,” said uThukela communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza.

A source within the district municipality, who asked not to be named, said the water supply issues will continue until senior management and workers find common ground.
