AfriForum gives NKZN dumps low score

Newcastle, Emadlangeni and Vryheid all showed low scores in terms of compliance.

District Co-ordinator for AfriForum in KZN, Eugene van Aswegen revealed in a recent press statement that only one out of nine landfills in the province met national standards this year.

This includes a score of 52 for the Newcastle Landfill, 16 for the dump in Emadlangeni (Utrecht) and 0 for Vryheid in terms of compliance.

The civil rights organisation publishes an annual landfill site audit, which scores dumps on areas including access control, waste inspection, tariffs, infrastructure, operating management plans, nuisance control, reclamation, drainage and record-keeping.

This can mainly be attributed to politicians who do not consider this aspect of service delivery to be important,” said van Aswegen, reacting to the audit findings.

Spokesperson for Emadlangeni Municipality, Ayanda Mabaso explained the main issue of the landfill site dated back to the early 2000s, with the site never designed or even approved as a landfill.
