Refugee children welcomed to Newcastle

The 'One Child, One Dream' tour bus stopped in town last week, to the excitement of many residents.

10 Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese refugees – between the ages of six and 18 – were welcomed warmly when they arrived in Newcastle last week (August 8), as part of their ‘One Child, One Dream’ tour.

Each child is sponsored by individuals from across the country, who represent the African Muslim Association (AMA).

I can’t believe they are actually here, in my home,” said an emotional Fathima Seedat, after the children disembarked at her house.

Seedat, along with Sumayya Omar, formed part of the women’s delegation from Newcastle that went to Lebanon to meet the refugee children this year.

On Tuesday, the children enjoyed themselves at Zinzani, a local farm just outside Newcastle. There, they got to meet other children to share the experiences and celebrate their first year of school.
