Municipality says no to violence against women and children

The 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence is an international campaign that commenced on November 25.

The Newcastle Municipality launched its 16 days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children at the Madadeni Community Hall on Monday, November 27.

Launched under the theme,” Accelerating Actions to end Gender Based Violence and Femicide, leaving no one behind”, more than 200 people attended the launch, including representatives from several government departments as well as important stakeholders including traditional leaders.

Attendees engaged in talks centred on issues of gender-based violence and explored ways to fight femicide, GBV, and child abuse in Newcastle.

In his speech, Mayor Dube said the ‘initiative aims to mobilize all of us to join in the effort of accelerating actions to end gender-based violence and femicide. It also sensitizes our residents to always act with care and within the law.”

He further encouraged members of the community to protect women and children and to stop the abuse against all mankind including men.

Newcastle’s campaign comes after The Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, officially launched 16 days of activism against women and children in Mbombela on November 25.

This year marks the 25th anniversary since South Africa initiated the campaign which focuses on raising awareness of the devastating impact violence has on the social fabric of our society.

During his address at a campaign in Durban, President Ramaphosa stated that boys must be taught to teach women with respect. Ramaphosa said the ANC has resolved to be more involved in the development of boys to ensure that they do not learn to behave violently towards women when they reach adult age.

“We’re promoting the respect of boys and generally men for the humanity of women. We’re saying as men: the women of South Africa, yes, we will respect you,” he commented.

The 16 days of Activism of No Violence Towards Women and Children will run from November 25 to December 10.
