uThukela engages with the community on water issues

JoJo tanks will be erected while long-term solutions are being implemented

uThukela District Municipality leadership visited the Ntokozweni area, Ward 25, in Colenso yesterday (November 8). The purpose of the visit was to give feedback following the meeting that was held recently with the mayor pertaining to water issues in the area, which falls under Alfred Duma Local Municipality.

Addressing the community, Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala said the district municipality is facing financial constraints. He also said that since a team of engineers is in the process of upgrading the Colenso Water Treatment Works, the cleaning of the reservoir and steel tank repairs will make a huge difference in supplying clean water.

As a short-term intervention, the mayor and his team committed to supplying this community with two 5000-litre JoJo tanks that will be connected to standpipes. As for safety measures, these tanks will be put up on steel stands. A Good Samaritan who is from the community has volunteered to assemble the steel stands, free of charge, as soon as the material becomes available.

The issue of overflowing sewage was also raised, and it was said that the technical team will attend to this as well. Mayor Shabalala pleaded with the community to protect their infrastructure so it will be easy to supply water while long-term interventions are being worked on.
