Road resurfacing project finally resumes

The completion of the project has been delayed since last year

It came as a relief to many motorists, business owners and pedestrians when resurfacing in Albert Street finally continued last week.

Last year, the potholed and damaged section of this road, from the corner of Harding Street to the corner of Phillip Street, was earmarked for resurfacing and pothole patching. The municipality appointed contractors that were tasked with different projects in the central business district (CBD) as part of the Town Rehabilitation Programme.

Late last year, the tarred surface of the road in Albert Street was scraped away, leaving dusty gravel.

“Shortly thereafter, heavy downpours started, which made it impossible for the contractor to be on site and continue with work. Thereafter, contractors and consultants closed for the December holidays,” commented Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality’s communication department.

The unfinished road was visited by new municipal manager Sthembiso Blessing Mthembu last Wednesday as part of his mandate to visit projects and verify work on the ground.

“He visited Albert Street and met with contractors and consultants on site. Hence, we are proud to confirm that work has resumed with a revised completion date of January 30,” added the communication department.

The scope of work in Albert Street includes base repairs, base priming, tack coat, edge break base repairs, edge break base priming, edge break base tack coat, surfacing, in-place recycling of base / sections badly damaged and concrete lined drains.

“Although the inconvenience is regrettable, we are confident that the ongoing work is on track and is according to the scope of work. The municipal manager has called for a closer monitoring and evaluation to ensure this is achieved. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused,” said the municipality.
