Government aims to accelerate service delivery

The government delegation visited some sites to check on the progress of service delivery

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, led by Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, held an Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) District Development Model programme recently. The premier was accompanied by uThukela District Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala, Speaker Cllr TY Nqubuka, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Cllr Mbuzeleni Mkhize, Inkosi Sithole and members of the Executive Council, and the administration team.

The event was hosted under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality to evaluate progress in service delivery and the implementation of various programmes to build safer communities and improve the lives of communities in various wards.

KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube puts the finishing touches to one of the homes in the eMhubheni Housing Project.

As part of the OSS cabinet day, the team visited various projects around Ward 16 to assess the impact of government programmes and to ensure public participation in the improvement of service delivery. This outreach also sought to listen to community issues related to development in these programmes.

Monitoring started with a visit to the Dalton Communal Project, followed by the eMhubheni Housing Project, where the premier and councillors handed over two houses. The first house was given to the Vilakazi family, who have been living in a self-built mud house that was in a very poor condition. The recipient of the second house was Gogo Khanyile, who earns no income except for her social grant.

The call for government intervention was identified by Ward Cllr Mkhize.  OSS is an initiative that brings government closer to communities. The inspection ended at the eMhubheni Community Hall, where Premier Dube-Ncube, together with the mayors and councillors, engaged with community members to glean local issues as raised in the War Room.

Some of the issues raised included stock theft (an action that jeopardises the integrity of the legal system), unemployment and the water crisis.

During the interaction, the leadership listened carefully while taking notes while members of the community raised issues related to safety, water, unemployment, housing, electricity, learner transport, access roads and other concerns, which government committed to respond to urgently.

uThukela District Mayor Inkosi Shabalala said he appreciated the premier’s visit in the district. He emphasised his commitment to improve service delivery and the quality of life for all citizens of the uThukela District, and to continue promoting human rights and dignity.
