AbaQulusi Local Municipality hosted the Mayoral Cup 2022 after a couple of years’ break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The dedication and determination exhibited by the participants showed just how hungry the youth has been for sporting activities. These games were in line with the IFP Ten Point Manifesto which aims at youth empowerment, sport development and prioritizing the upgrading of sporting infrastructure.

Mayoral Cup 2022 was graced by scouts from different sporting codes, including a scout from Amazulu Football Club. Also in attendance were some well-recognised players like Siphelele Mthembu, as well as radio sports legends Irvin Shlope and Joe Hudla.

The winners of the games will be representing AbaQulusi Municipality at the District Mayoral Cup, which will be held in Pongola on a date yet to be confirmed. Those who win at district level will then advance to the provincial SALGA Games, which will be held in Newcastle from December 1 to 4 this year.

“With these games, our first aim was to ensure that AbaQulusi is well represented in the upcoming district competition. Secondly, we wanted to ensure that we strengthen our involvement in sports development. Thirdly, by bringing the likes of Siphelele Mthembu, we were showing the youth that you can make a living through your talent. Yes, we understand the importance of education and we will continue to advocate for our youth to get educated, but we also encourage them not to shy away from nurturing their talents, as this has the potential to place them on the world stage and become the pride of their hometowns and the country as a whole.

“To our winners, we are extremely proud of their performance. They will be our flag-bearers going forward, as these competitions will open more doors for them to advance further with their talents. I would also like to say to those who did not win that they still have a chance next year to win this competition. They should continue to work hard, as their time is coming,” said Mayor Mncedisi Maphisa.
