Scam artist demands money from snowstorm victim’s family

The conman continued to ask for money even after the missing man's body had been found

The family of Wayne Bhengu have reported that they almost got scammed while looking for their lost relative.

Bhengu died of hypothermia after going missing during the snowstorm last month.

A scam artist allegedly tried to get money from the family, claiming that he knew where Bhengu was.

The deceased went missing at the time when thousands of people were blocked in the snow on the N3 highway between Estcourt and the Free State. According to the family member who posted a missing person’s report on the Estcourt News Facebook page, Bhengu’s body was later located at Estcourt Hospital, where it was confirmed that he had passed away after the Intercity Bus he was travelling in got stuck on the N3. Bhengu was going home to Durban from Pretoria.

Genevieve Horne, the deceased’s sister-in-law, told SowetanLive that they hired a private investigator, Brad Nathanson, after not hearing from Bhengu on the Friday.

Nathanson commented that after posting information about Bhengu on his Facebook account, a scam artist popped up and demanded R50,000, saying he would provide information concerning the missing man’s whereabouts. The scammer didn’t realise Nathanson was an investigator; he thought he was a family member.
