Harsh sentence for copper thief

The cables belonged to Transnet

Wassem Pachkowdie (21) was recently sentenced to an effective 13 years’ imprisonment by the Ezakheni Regional Court. He stood accused of being in possession of stolen property.

During October last year, he was arrested along the N11 and was found to be in possession of a bolt cutter and Transnet copper cabling valued at just under R300,000.

The cabling formed part of Transnet essential infrastructure.

In addition to the prison sentence, the accused was found unfit to possess a firearm.
