145 suspected murderers among 9595 suspects arrested in KZN during May

1489 suspects were arrested for assaulting others with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Despite the deployment of over 17 000 police officers to safeguard the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, day-to-day policing continued unhindered, with police in KZN making 9 595 arrests in May.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda KZN Provincial SAPS spokesperson said 3124 suspects were arrested for contact crimes.

“145 of them have been brought to book for murder cases. Another 186 were nabbed for their alleged involvement in cases of attempted murder,” he said.

A total of 295 firearms, inclusive of 11 rifles, 11 shotguns, and 12 homemade firearms, were removed from the streets.

2494 rounds of ammunition from various calibres of firearms were also seized.

“The fight against violence perpetrated against women and children intensified, which resulted in the arrest of 205 rape suspects, 12 for attempted rape, and 32 for sexual assault. Another 155 were arrested for the transgression of the Domestic Violence Act.”

122 suspects were cornered and arrested for various forms of robbery, including robbery with aggravating circumstances.

38 of those suspects were suspected to have been involved in a string of house robberies.

1489 suspects were arrested for assaulting others with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

608 more suspects were brought to justice on charges of common assault.

Investigations into property-related crimes led to the arrest of 393 suspects, 216 of whom were suspected to be involved in cases of burglary at residential premises.

49 people were arrested for stock theft; 338 suspects arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol; and another 64 people were nabbed for kidnapping.

Three people were also arrested for public violence.
