Newcastle law enforcement apprehends three wanted suspects

During the kidnapping and assault, the victim was able to get a good look at some of the suspects, enabling him to identify them.

Three foreign nationals have been arrested by the Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation (Soci) on charges of malicious damage to property, grievous bodily harm and attempted murder

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS corporate communications officer, said the crimes occurred in Ladysmith on the night of January 11.

“The victim was at his house when unknown people, posing as police officers, demanded entry to his home.”

Suspicious, the homeowner refused to open the door. The men then kicked the door down before forcefully removing the victim from his house and taking him to the Dannhauser area where he was severely beaten with hockey sticks.

Arumugam said the men left the victim next to the side of the road and fled the scene. He was assisted by an unknown person, who arranged for an ambulance to take him to Madadeni Hospital where he was admitted and treated.

Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation took over the investigation on April 22.

A lengthy investigation followed which resulted in linking the suspects to the crime, and on May 15, Newcastle SOCI arrested three suspects near Madadeni.

All three suspects have made their first court appearance in the Ladysmith Magistrate Court, while further police investigations continue.
