Seven suspects arrested for possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition

Law enforcement received a tip-off that the men were about to commit robbery in the Newcastle Riverside industrial area.

SAPS and security officers combined to bring to book seven men who were planning to rob a Chinese-owned factory in Newcastle on April 28.

One of those arrested is an escapee facing charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition in Piet Retief, Kwamsane and Mkhuze.

Mornè Potgieter, Ithemba Security’s Head of Operations, said a tip off was received that the men were about to commit robbery in the Newcastle Riverside industrial area.

“The suspects got ‘spooked’ and abandoned their robbery plans and attempted to flee,” he said.

A roadblock was set up by all law enforcement members before Vryheid, while members from Newcastle gave chase.

A Suzuki Ertiga was intercepted, and seven suspects arrested for being in possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

  • One 9mm pistol (Lorinco) – Positively linked to Ulundi Cas 234/01/2024
  • One 9mm short with erased s/n
  • One 9mm Norinco with erased s/n
  • Five 9mm short live ammunition
  • Thirty live 9mm live ammunition.
  • One white Suzuki Ertiga
