Newcastle SAPS break down February crime statistics

The New Year, 2024, has seen no respite from crime in the district… Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, Lizzy Arumugam, reported on crimes logged in February.

  • Osizweni Detectives are investigating a case of robbery near Theku Plaza. The complainant alleged that he was confronted by four men who threatened him with knives. They took his belongings and cash.
  • A Kirkland Street pedestrian was robbed of cash and a cellphone when he was confronted by four men, one of whom drew a knife, at about 7pm on January 27.  Newcastle Detectives are investigating.
  • Dannhauser Detectives are investigating a case of robbery after a man was threatened with a firearm and robbed of money. The incident took place on February 3 at about 16:00 in the Allen area. The victim said he was at his homestead when the gunman struck.
  • A man was robbed of his cellphone after he was confronted by two men who pointed a knife at him, threatening to kill him. The robbery took place at around 10.30 on February 3 in Barry Hertzog Park.
  • A tuckshop customer was assaulted and robbed of his cellphone on the evening of January 27 in the Siyahlahla area. The victim said he gone to the tuckshop to order food when he a man came in and for no apparent reason, started assaulting him on the face with open hands, kicked him to the ground, and made off with his cell phone. Following an investing, the 21-year-old suspect, was arrested on February 4 and has since appeared in  the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court.
