Two suspects arrested for attempted murder in CBD

Two suspects have been charged with attempted murder after stabbing a man several times on Voortrekker Street.

Newcastle Detectives are investigating an attempted murder on Voortrekker Street in the CBD area on January 20.

Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS corporate communications department, the victim alleged he went to John’s Shop to buy a packet of cigarettes when he was stopped by one of the suspects in the doorway.

“Trying to avoid an altercation he went to another shop. However, the suspect and a friend followed him and stabbed him several times from behind before fleeing the scene,” she said.

The victim was taken to hospital where he received stitches to his head, back and chest.

A police investigation followed which lead to the arrest of two men, aged 23 and 27, who have since appeared in the Newcastle Magistrates Court.
