A night out turns violent at local tavern over the weekend

A suspect been arrested and charged for Attempted Murder after stabbing a man in the face at the Fasso Shelters.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he stabbed a man near the Fasso Supermarket Shelters on Allen Street last weekend.

Lizzy Arumugam, of the Newcastle SAPS corporate communications department, said the victim alleged he was with a friend at the Valley Inn Tavern on Voortrekker Street when police descended on the tavern.

“He further alleged that he had a knife in his possession and was afraid of the police presence, prompting him to run away from the tavern. He ran to the Fasso Shelters, where he was approached by the suspect, who wanted to know why he was running,” she explained.

The suspect then allegedly stabbed the man three times in the face. He was rushed to the hospital, where he received medical treatment.

Following an investigation, the suspect was caught and arrested on January 29 and has since appeared in the Newcastle Magistrates Court.
