Seven suspects arrested following armed robbery at Gutenberg Street business

All seven suspects have been apprehended and arrested and will appear before the Magistrate's Court soon on charges of armed robbery.

Seven suspects have been arrested following last Saturday’s armed robbery at a business on Gutenberg Street in Riverside Industrial.

Mornè Potgieter of Ithemba Security said three armed suspects entered the business and held the business owner at gunpoint demanding cash, cellphones and other valuable items while the remaining four suspects stood guard outside, before fleeing the scene.

Ithemba Security was notified of the robbery and together with the Chinese CPF, they immediately started following up on information and verified the possible whereabouts of one of the suspects involved.

Itemba’s Specialised Intervention Unit conducted an Intelligence-Driven Operation on Monday, October 30, with the help of Osizweni Vispol, Newcastle Detectives and the KZN CIMDOC, which lead them to the recovery of a vehicle used during the robbery as well as the arrest of the first suspect.

Potgieter  added that more information was gathered and followed up on, leading authorities to a ‘safe-house’ in the vicinity of Osizweni.

“The safe-house was tactically approached and a further six more suspects were apprehended and taken into police custody. We also recovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol from which the serial number was filed off, as well as items that were stolen from the business,” he said.

The suspects arrested were all between the ages of 28 and 41 years old and will soon appear before a magistrate.

The suspects have also been positively linked to another robbery.

“I would like to thank each and every person and department involved in the arrest for their dedicated and fast reaction to this case,” Potgieter concluded.
