Sentenced to 15 years in jail for cable theft

Copper cabling valued at over R500,000 was recovered

Bongani Welcome Mbata (32) was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the Ezakheni Regional Court earlier this month (October).

Mbata was arrested in September 2022 during a sting operation in the Acaciavale area.

In his possession, officers found copper cables that belonged to Transnet. The recovered cabling was valued at over half a million rand.

Mbata remained in custody after his bail application was opposed by the state.

The investigating officer welcomed the sentence, saying that, “Cable theft is dealing a devastating blow to our economy!

“Essential infrastructure has been severely affected and law enforcement agencies, including the police, are working tirelessly to bring perpetrators to book.”
