Councillor accused of rape granted bail

The accused will appear in court again on September 6

The IFP councillor accused of raping a 14-year-old girl has been granted bail by the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court.

He appeared in court for the second time today (August 25), when he applied for bail.

His new attorney, Mr Justin Heunis, came with new evidence this morning, which included a letter and a video recording alleged to be from the victim.

The court adjourned to give the prosecutor time to investigate the new evidence. The court ordered that the alleged victim meet the prosecutor for questioning / clarity.

When the court came back after lunch, the defence read the accused’s affidavit and also his fiance’s affidavit.

The court granted him R5000 bail and he will appear in court again on September 6.
