Residents are warned to be on the lookout for ‘fake notes’

There seems to be an influx of these notes in Newcastle, which is quite possibly a syndicate operation.

The Newcastle Community Policing Forum has issued an official warning to all residents to be on the lookout for fake money that has been circulated in Newcastle over the past 24 hours.

According to a statement released by the CPF, approximately R4 000 worth of fake R200 notes have been brought to and recovered by CPF and SAPS members.

Residents and businesses are advised to be vigilant when accepting large quantities of R200 notes, particularly the newly released note.

How to spot if your money is genuine:

  • Watermark;
  • Perfect registration (see-through) security feature;
  • Security thread;
  • Unique numbering;
  • Colour-changing ink;
  • Holographic coat of arms in the security thread;
  • Shimmering gold band

“There seems to be an influx of these notes in Newcastle, which is quite possibly a syndicate operation. We just want to advise the community to exercise caution and double, if not triple, check the notes they accept. Look at and understand the security features of these notes,” the statement concluded.

If you spot these fake notes or know of someone circulating them, contact the CPF at 072 136 7677 or 065 879 2316.
